I just joined and was asked to run the machine that checks products for metal. How do I start it?
That is the X-ray inspection machine on Packaging line 2, used for foreign-matter detection on the frozen-fries line. Its work instruction is WI-PRO-002. To start up:
Step 1 pre-op setup

Power on, wait for the ready indicator, then verify calibration with a test sample

Step 2 challenge test

Run the test cards one at a time and confirm each is detected and rejected: ferrous 1.5, non-ferrous 2.0, stainless 2.5, glass 3.0, hard plastic 4.0 mm

Step 3 operate

Select the correct product profile and start; rejects drop to the reject bin and are logged automatically

If any card is not detected, halt production and notify Maintenance. Re-run the performance test every 2 hours and log it.

4. Equipment & records required
  • Detection test standards (metal, glass, plastic samples)
  • Control panel with reject log system
  • Production logbook or digital recording system
5. Procedure
5.1  Pre-Operational Setup
  1. Turn on the machine and wait for the ready indicator light to confirm the system is operational.
  2. Verify calibration by running a test sample (metal, glass, plastic) through the conveyor belt.
  3. Conduct a detection challenge test using the verification test cards:
    • Ferrous metal test card (1.5 mm)
    • Non-ferrous metal test card (2.0 mm)
    • Stainless steel test card (2.5 mm)
    • Glass test card (3.0 mm)
    • Hard plastic test card (4.0 mm)
  4. Insert each test card into a sample bag and pass it through the machine one at a time.
  5. Verify that each card is correctly detected and rejected by the system.
  6. If any sample is not detected, halt production and notify Maintenance for recalibration.
  7. Record the results in the production logbook before proceeding to normal operations.
5.2  Performing Foreign Matter Detection
  1. Ensure the frozen fries pass evenly through the conveyor without blockage.
  2. Select the correct product profile and press start; the machine scans automatically.
  3. Monitor the real-time detection interface for contamination alerts.
  4. On a detection, the system auto-rejects the bag and logs the event.
